At the Military Science Days, SiEnE experts presented the applicability of technologies in enhancing energy resilience.

Reading time: 4 min

Collaboration and knowledge exchange between various disciplines and experts is crucial for the development of technological solutions for both civil and defence purposes. This year's Military Science Days programme was enriched by experts from the Slovenian Partnership for Energy and Environment in Defence (SiEnE), who provided professional insights into the challenges of achieving energy resilience for the Slovenian Armed Forces. This highlights the strategic role of SiEnE in connecting Slovenian experts in the development of technological solutions that enhance the energy resilience of Slovenia’s defence system.

The Military Science Days, organised by the Centre for Military Schools of the Slovenian Armed Forces as part of the Military Academy's research activities, were held this year under the title "Military Transformation in the Light of Military Sciences." The event's main aim was to strengthen scientific and professional cooperation, share best practices, and promote innovation in civil and defence sectors.

Challenges in Energy Supply for Deployable Camps

Colonel Robert Šipec, Head of the Energy Efficiency and Green Transition Department at the Ministry of Defence (SiMoD), introduced a panel on using advanced technologies by presenting the key challenges in the energy supply for deployable infrastructure capacities. He emphasised the high logistical demands of fuel delivery, noting that an additional 7 litres are required for logistics for every litre of fuel delivered. Furthermore, this logistical burden is associated with significant security risks.

The Importance of Interoperability in Energy Supply

Interoperability is a crucial challenge when introducing technological solutions. Prof. Dr. Gorazd Štumberger from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, at the University of Maribor stressed the importance of connectivity between various microgrids, which enables the exchange of equipment between national units without disrupting energy supply or requiring integrator interventions. A solution for an interoperable system ensuring secure and stable communication between operational and information technologies was presented by Sašo Ilić and Dr. Blaž Peternel from Smartis.

Demonstration of Deploying a Mobile 5G Network in the Field

SiEnE experts, mag. Matej Rabzelj and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mojca Volk from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the University of Ljubljana shed light on cybersecurity in operational and communication-information systems. They presented the fundamentals of cyber honeypot technologies and tools for detecting analysing, and visualising cyberattacks. Luka Korišič, MSc and dr. Janez Sterle from the Internet Institute demonstrated the practical deployment of a mobile 5G network to support critical infrastructure. The solution enables the rapid and reliable establishment of a network in the field, which is essential for supporting military operations.

Modularity of Solutions Enables Quick and Easy Field Deployment

Marino Montani, MSc from Robotina presented the development of advanced solutions for the energy supply of deployable bases for  civil and defence purposes. As a common denominator of the solutions developed within various research and pilot demonstration projects, he highlighted modern technology, such as digital twins, for remote management and system maintenance. He emphasised the importance of modularity, which allows for quick field deployment using a "plug and play" system.

The panel concluded with a roundtable discussion, during which speakers highlighted the importance of innovation and technological progress in addressing the energy and environmental challenges the Slovenian Armed Forces faced. Therefore, strengthening the collaboration of Slovenian experts in developing advanced technological solutions, as carried out within the SiEnE partnership, is of the utmost importance.
