Launch of the demonstration use of the MODEL+ smart modular building at the Murska Sobota barracks

The smart modular object MODEL+ prototype already serves its purpose at the Murska Sobota barracks, where project partners collect vital feedback during the test operation to optimise the solution further. This marks a successful development transition from laboratory environments to the field, where the object is already proving its reliability under real-life conditions.

In recent months, leading partner REM, together with DANFOSS Trata, KRONOTERM, PIKTRONIK and ROBOTINA, under the coordination of TECES, have been intensively fine-tuning the operation of all integrated technologies. They ensure complete interoperability and closely monitor key performance parameters.

Gaining a deeper understanding of the necessary adjustments to meet end users’ specific needs

The prototype, designed for dual-use civilian and defence applications, has been deployed at the Murska Sobota barracks. Members of the Slovenian Armed Forces are trialling the object, thereby providing invaluable insights for technical optimisation. During this period, partners gain a deeper understanding of necessary adjustments based on end users' specific needs, actively monitoring thermodynamic parameters, battery charging from the integrated solar power plant, and other key operational indicators. All this is to tailor the object as closely as possible to end-user requirements by the time development concludes.

Five Slovenian companies are contributing to the development of an advanced and interconnected solution

The two-year MODEL+ project will conclude this August. Each partner has contributed its specific expertise and competencies to the creation of this advanced and interconnected solution. REM has designed the modular structure with innovative construction solutions and oversees the integration of all technologies from other partners into a fully functioning system. DANFOSS Trata has provided a smart heating and cooling system that continuously learns and self-optimises through artificial intelligence during operation. KRONOTERM has developed a highly efficient, compact heating, cooling and domestic hot water storage system. PIKTRONIK has delivered a battery energy storage system to ensure independence and flexibility. ROBOTINA integrates all these solutions into a smart system, providing easy central management via a digital twin and an outstanding user experience.

The ultimate goal: opening foreign markets with Slovenian solutions

The MODEL+ project falls under the National Strategic Programme PamPIK umbrella, focusing on smart, energy-efficient and energy-independent deployable bases for dual use. This programme represents one of the key strategic areas of the Slovenian Energy and Environment Partnership in Defence (SiEnE). With support from Slovenian partners and the Ministry of Defence (MoD), SiEnE is leading internationally in addressing energy and environmental challenges within the defence sector.

By supporting projects like MODEL+, the SiEnE partnership fosters the development and demonstration of high-tech solutions, opening doors for Slovenian partners to enter foreign markets and integrate more successfully into international supply chains.
